There are currently nearly 60 wild mammal species in Indiana. Join us Saturday, May 5 at Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge where we’ll take a closer peek at a few of those found living within Refuge boundaries. The guest speaker will share information on current distribution and status of certain endangered or rare species, as well as information on mammal dental formulas as a means of identification. We'll have mammal skins on hand to identify and touch, and also a few mammal skulls to observe and study. Take-home handouts will be available, as well as hands-on mammal track identification fun.

A presentation highlighting Bill’s career will start at 1:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area. If you plan on attending, please make a reservation with Rosalie at Rosalie_Mosley@fws.gov, or feel free to just stop by Wirth Park. April showers bring wildflowers! Join Patoka River NWR volunteer, Linda Wilcox, and discover what is blooming on the Refuge on Saturday, April 21 (rain date, April 28) at 9:00 a.m. CST. Meet at the Boyd’s Trail parking lot and plan to drive or carpool to a designated location on the Refuge. Exploring will be off trail through the woods. Suitable clothing and shoes, as well as insect repellent, are suggested.

Saturday evening, March 10, and Sunday evening, March 11, the Refuge Friends will offer a unique birding experience for the whole family. Most outings aren’t focused on just one animal, but woodcocks are so neat they get a whole night all their own!
Just what is a “Peent”? It’s the sound made by male woodcocks while performing their courtship ritual flights. Join local art teacher and excellent birder, Jeremy Ross, at Boyd’s Trail parking lot on Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge at 7:00 p.m. Eastern / 6:00 p.m. Central for a brief presentation on the woodcock. Then, we’ll walk over to Maxey Marsh Trail and hope the woodcocks are in the mood to put on a good show. This event is open to all, regardless of age or experience. Yet, since this is an event in the evening that is dependent on a fairly quiet environment, parents are encouraged to stay with their children. Consider arriving early to enjoy the sunset and walk some trails. Directions: From SR 357 (Main St.) in Oakland City, go east on SR 64 one mile to CR 1275E (look for Refuge sign). Turn left (north) on 1275E. Follow the signs to Snakey Point Marsh and continue on to the parking lot on the left at Boyd’s Trail. Have questions or need directions? Look us up on Facebook @PatokaRefugeFriends or call 812-569-4009. The Friends of The Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge invite you to a presentation by local historian, geographer and story teller, Tom Mosley, on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Central time.
Tom will discuss some historically important geographical, social, political and economic features of the area that make the Refuge such an interesting place to visit. The impact of Indians, settlers, trappers, slaves, soldiers, and politicians will be discussed as we walk the same paths that they did. We will meet on the site where one of our true heroes is buried. The outing will be physically easy. From Oakland City, drive east on State Road 64 and follow the brown Snakey Point signs. Turn left (north) on CR 1275 E. Continue to follow the Snakey Point signs until you reach County Road 75 S. From there, follow the special event signs to the destination. If it is raining, the program will be rescheduled for April 14th. For further information, call 812.677.2318 or email tmrmind@frontier.com. The meeting of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Patoka River NWR is scheduled for the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. CT at Wood Memorial High School's Library in Oakland City, IN.
